Ministry to Feed the Hungry/Food Pantry

Food Pantry at St. CamillusThis is a direct service ministry whose goal is to promote food security for members of the St. Camillus family and local residents. Food security is access to safe, adequate, sufficient, easy-to-use, and culturally appropriate food at all times of the year. The largest activity of this ministry is the operation of two Food Pantries, one in the rectory basement and one in Langley Park, which provide emergency food assistance to families in need. Pantry hours: Silver Spring –  Friday - 3-5PM, Saturday 10-12 noon; at our Langley Park location – Saturday 10-12 noon. If you are in need of food, please contact the friary office at 301-434-8400.

Volunteer opportunities include: volunteer coordination; pick-up and delivery of food donations; sorting, shelving, and bagging food; carrying food over to the pantry after mass; shopping for and/or transporting large quantities of food; organizing food collections at your place of work; distributing food; and fund raising. Each week we stop off at Safeway or Giant to buy groceries for our families.  We pick up some pasta and sauce for tonight, maybe some peanut butter and jelly for the kids' lunches, and a can of tuna for a casserole later in the week.  Hopefully, while we are shopping for our family, we remember to shop for "our family", those countless thousands right in our parish area who are out of work and struggling to put food on their families' tables.

At St. Camillus we ask each person to try and bring at least one food item each Sunday to help replenish our two food pantries. We believe that if "each one brings one" when they come to Mass, we can go a long way toward wiping out hunger in our neighborhood.  This is stewardship at its most basic- realizing how blessed we are to have enough money to buy enough food for our families and, out of that gratitude, sharing with others whose families otherwise might go without. Below is a list of the most needed items.
